Our first collection of cufflinks are classic silver ovals, linked with a chain, and as satisfying to hold as they are to wear. The design focus has been on subtle detailing and colour. We have taken styles that are easy to wear and updated them by etching our own patterns onto the silver and choosing custom colours in beautifully hand applied vitreous enamel.
Our cufflinks are made in Birmingham, the centre of the British silver industry, by a family company that have been operating since 1684. The first step in production is to hand cut a die with our subtle detailing. This is then stamped onto thick sheets of silver bullion. It is on to these patterns that the enamel is applied. The enameller fires the cufflink with a blowtorch to melt the enamel. This is left to cool and harden before polishing.
Augustus Hare cufflinks are made from solid sterling silver, appropriately hallmarked. This silver is forged, rather than cast, giving the cufflinks a reassuring weight in the hand. Onto this fine silver vitreous enamel is applied by quill. Vitreous enamel is effectively glass. This coloured glass is hand ground using a traditional pestle and mortar, because machines fail to produce a consistent smoothness. This fine enamel produces a rich and lustrous translucency: the quality will be spotted instantly.
